IRIS is the online system through which the Federal Board of Revenue manages almost every interaction with taxpayers in Pakistan. Registration, income tax returns, wealth statements, sales tax returns, refund applications, responses to notices and even appeals now flow through this portal. For a first-time user the interface can look intimidating, but the underlying logic is straightforward once you understand how the screens are organised.

Access begins with your credentials. Individuals log in with their CNIC number as the user ID and the password generated at registration. If you have forgotten the password, the reset option sends codes to your registered mobile and email, which is why keeping those details current matters so much. Companies log in with their NTN. After entering the password you may be asked for a PIN, a separate four-digit code used to verify submissions. Never share the PIN, since it functions as your electronic signature.

The dashboard is divided into folders. The Inbox holds notices, letters and messages from the FBR, and this is the first place to check on every login. Drafts contains forms you have started but not yet submitted. Completed Tasks shows everything you have filed, with the ability to download acknowledgement receipts and printed copies. The Declaration menu is where you start new returns, and the Registration menu allows you to update your profile or apply for sales tax registration.

Filing a return begins under Declaration by selecting the form for the relevant tax year. Salaried individuals with no business income normally use the simplified salary return, while people with business, rental or capital gains income use the normal return. The form opens as a series of tabs covering employment income, other sources, deductions, tax already paid and adjustable withholding. Each figure you enter feeds into a computation tab that calculates your liability or refund automatically.

One of the most useful features is the Tax Paid section, which can pull in withholding data reported by banks, employers and other withholding agents against your CNIC. Always compare this data with your own records. If a bank has reported withholding under your CNIC that you did not know about, you may be entitled to an adjustment or refund. If your employer's deductions are missing, ask the employer to file or correct their withholding statement before you submit.

The wealth statement is filed alongside the return and reconciles your assets and liabilities at the start and end of the year with your income and expenses. Beginners often leave it to the end and rush it. Prepare it first, because inconsistencies between the wealth statement and the income declared are the single most common trigger for a notice. Personal expenses such as rent, utilities, education, travel and household costs must be entered realistically.

Before submitting, IRIS runs validation checks and highlights errors in red. Read each one carefully. Common problems include a missing bank account number, a mismatch between opening and closing wealth, and unexplained increases in assets. Once every check clears, enter your PIN and submit. Download the acknowledgement immediately and store it with your supporting documents for at least six years.

Responding to notices follows a similar pattern. Open the notice from your Inbox, read the section of law cited, and use the Reply option to upload your explanation and documents before the deadline shown. IRIS records the exact time of your reply, which protects you if a dispute later arises about whether you responded on time. Requests for extension of time are also submitted through the same reply function.

A few habits make the portal far less stressful. Use a desktop browser rather than a phone, keep pop-ups enabled for the site, save drafts frequently, and never leave filing to the final day when the servers are busiest. If you get stuck, the FBR helpline and the built-in help documents cover most routine issues. With one or two filings behind you, IRIS becomes a routine annual task rather than an ordeal.
